About Vernal Pools and the Frogs

In autumn and winter, vernal pools fill with water due to rainfall and rising groundwater and remain ponded through spring and summer.

Every year, or at least every few years, vernal pools dry completely by mid-summer. The occasional drying of the water prevents fish from establishing permanent populations, which is crucial to the breeding success of many amphibian and invertebrate species.
